My connection to the nonprofit sector traces back to my childhood, when I accompanied my mother as a food pantry volunteer. Much later on, my career ambitions settled on work in support of the nonprofit sector - desiring an impact that extended beyond me. This path has afforded me many connections and relations - to causes, people, and communities. These varied experiences have proven their worth to my teaching, research, and engagement in the nonprofit sector. As an academic, I translate my research and training to practitioner audiences, and as a practitioner, I seek to inform my work with evidence.

Learn from me
My research began with observations collected during my professional work, sparking my curiosity about how individuals enter the nonprofit sector and rise in its leadership ranks. My research has explored topics such as nonprofit leadership continuity, career development, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on nonprofit workers. I am particularly interested in the gap between the ideals of what organizations and individuals should do and their actual practices.
My research often involves primary data collection, meaning I have engaged with thousands of nonprofit professionals through interviews and surveys. I view research as a project to manage, and I have pursued nearly 25 ideas from conception to publication in peer-reviewed journals. Additionally, I am in the final stages of co-editing a peer-reviewed book on nonprofit human resources.
I serve on the editorial board of the journal Nonprofit Management and Leadership, and I am also a reviewer for other scholarly journals. I have been intentional in translating my research and insights for practitioner audiences. As a result, my research and writing have been featured in media outlets such as the Stanford Social Innovation Review, the Chronicle of Philanthropy, and CNN.
How I Can Assist You:
- Research Collaboration: Partner on research projects to explore topics relevant to the nonprofit sector.
- Data Analysis & Insights: Provide evidence-based insights to support your nonprofit's practice or analyze existing data for actionable conclusions.

Career Advising
I have successfully navigated my own nonprofit career ladder, studied what contributes to a nonprofit professional's success in seeking promotions, and mentored students and professionals as they navigate their own career paths. I am adept at assessing opportunities, building networks, and providing guidance that aligns with both personal and professional goals. Additionally, I have planned and implemented career development and professional networking events to foster growth and connection.
I frequently hear from students and professionals who seek my advice, often returning for further guidance. I listen attentively and encourage others to find alignment between what Frederick Buechner called "Your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger." I can assist with general career advice, leadership development, or offer confidential guidance as you navigate professional opportunities—including drafting and reviewing communications or job materials.
